Training Program on Hospital Care Level Personnel in Tuberculosis Prevention and Control

The ASEAN Institute for Health Development (AIHD) successfully conducted another Tuberculosis prevention and control training programme for hospital care level personnel from Cambodia, Loa, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV) on 7-18 August 2017 in Narai Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand.

  The training programme is a continuation of “The training programs and workshop on Strengthening Capacity for Effective Implementation of the National Tuberculosis Prevention and Control Program in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV) Countries under Japan International cooperation Agency’s (JICA) Third Country Training Program” as the first training was done on 13-24 February 2017 on National Policy and Management Level Personnel in TB Prevention and Control in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Training aims at the incidence and prevalence of TB including cross-border TB and HIV/AIDS related problems in CLMV countries are reduced through effective national TB prevention and control program implementation. There are altogether 26 participants, 8 from Cambodia, 10 from Lao PDR and 8 from Vietnam. The training course director Prof. Dr.SupaPengpid opened the Training and the Senior Representative of JICA (Ms. Cheiko KAJISWA) & the director of Bureau of Tuberculosis (BTB) (Dr.PhalinKalmowat), Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) Thailand also gave an opening speech.

Supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), with the technical supported by Bureau of Tuberculosis (BTB), this training is the 2nd TB prevention and control training which was organized by AIHD. Thailand is also the focal point for cross border TB Prevention and control among CLMV countries.

The training combined interactive and participatory lectures, and discussions to promote experience sharing.  It covered pertinent topics which included conceptual and regional frameworks on Tuberculosis prevention and control, country presentation, role of doctors/nurses/health workers, and the role of government officers and policy makers on TB management not only inside country but also border TB management.

The sessions were facilitated by experts from Thailand – Bureau of Tuberculosis, WHO (world Health Organization), MOPH, Global Fund, AIHD and Research Institute Tuberculosis, Japan Anti-Tuberculosis Association from Japan. There were altogether 20 lessons including field visit to National Chest Institute and Bureau of tuberculosis to learn TB management as tertiary care hospital.

The training also incorporated study visits to ChaingRai city two sites: Prachanukroh Hospital and SomdejpranyanNasangworn hospital, the participants were exposed to the various services it provides to TB patient as provincial, district and community level health care management system. Participants got the chance to visit WatRongKunn (White Temple) and many natural visits in ChaingRai District as cultural visit. As social event, there was welcome reception to explore friendship and culture exchange among Cambodia, Laos PDR, Vietnam and Thailand.

On the last day of the training, participants made presentation of each country take home mission on TB prevention and control not only inside country but also in border TB management. The director of Countries Partnership Branch (Bilateral &Trilateral), TICA office (Mr.WattanawitGajaseni) gave closing remark and course director presented training report in closing session with acknowledgement of presenting first secretary from Royal Embassy of Cambodia.

Moving forward, the AIHD will plan to conduct the 3rd TB prevention and control training on community health care level in May 2018 and evaluation workshop in each country till 2019 on move forward
