Over the past years, the Viet Nam and the United Stated have achieved remarkable results in pharmaceutical cooperation:

Collaboration on perfecting the legal framework:

US pharmaceutical companies always pay close attention to and coordinate with drug management agencies in the process of drafting and promulgation of legal documents on pharmaceuticals, through the form of sending comments. Participating in and exchanging ideas at consultative conferences on forthcoming drafts, meetings, seminars etc. This is a very valuable source of expertise that the Drug Administration of Viet Nam is always interested in research to receive or justify. Therefore, it can be said that the success of the Pharmaceutical Law 2016 and Decree 54/2017/ND-CP has a valuable contribution of US agencies, organizations and businesses.

Co-operation on drug supply:

Since 2004, Viet Nam has become the 15th country in the world to receive support from the US Government through the PEPFAR Program, which is an important part of the program's funding to purchase treatment drugs. US Government support has greatly contributed to the prevention and control of the HIV epidemic in Viet Nam.

Most recently, the Ministry of Health has reached an agreement with Gilead Sciences, a US company, on a number of measures to increase access to the hepatitis C vaccine in Viet Nam. The most remarkable thing is that Gilead will ensure enough medicines for hepatitis C patients in Viet Nam, including Sovaldi, Havorni and Epcluse, at low prices, equal to only 1% of the drug price currently sold in the US market. At the same time, Gilead Sciences will support Viet Nam pharmaceutical companies to produce Hepatitis C medicines for lower prices comparred to the imported ones as well as to support bio eqivalent studies on generic medicines made in Viet Nam against drug produced in the United States.

Cooperation on training, capacity building

With the financial and technology support of the US, through international frameworks such as APEC, Life Sciences Innovation Forum ... staffs of the Drug Administration have been participated in a number of short-term training courses in the United States. However, the need to learn, and to share experience in pharmaceutical management, clinical pharmacology, biological equivalence, etc. is still very big and urgent. Drug Administration of Viet Nam is working with a number of US partners to organize a workshop on "Sharing best practices on a unified pharmaceutical and health management model. directly related to human health” to learn about the US FDA model and its relevance to the situation in Viet Nam.
